What To Do When You Get a New Puppy

Getting a new puppy is an exciting time. But there is a serious side to bringing home your new puppy dog and there are many factors to consider before you even get the puppy. First you need to decide where you will keep him or her. Will it be a totally outdoor dog? If it is an outdoor dog, he will still need some warm, dry and draft free to sleep at night. A garage can suit this need well.

Next, check all your fencing and make sure there are no gaps. Small dogs can fit through even the smallest spaces and large dogs have no problem jumping low fences. Make sure all this is in check before bringing your new dog home.

Once your dog is home it is time to introduce him to his new family and new surroundings! Understandably the dog is going to be a little frightened and curious about what is going on. It will take a few days for him to settle in but you can help the process along by spending a lot of time with the puppy and socializing him with the family. If the puppy is very young then it is advisable to keep him inside at least until he is a little older. Of course, supervised walks on a leash outdoors are always recommended for fresh air, sunshine and exercise.

After your puppy comes home you should make an appointment with a vet for a check up. Even if the dog has a clean bill of health from where you got him, it pays for a thorough check up anyway. To reduce stress, don't take him during the first week as there is no great rush if the dog seems healthy.

Food is an important factor when you get a new puppy. Experiment with a variety of foods until you find what he really likes. Try commercial dry dog food, canned dog foods, raw bones and even home cooked meals. A good diet at a young age will set the puppy up for a healthy life.

When your puppy has settled in at home you may consider taking him to obedience training. This is especially ideal if it is a large dog breed, as starting early can ward off undesirable behavior at later stages.

Most important of all when bringing your new puppy home is to love and treasure him like a member of the family!
